Our students are eager to learn but are limited by their access to information that will challenge and inspire them.
Imagine a classroom with 25 eager students, ready to tackle their assignment.
The teacher says, "Okay students, we have three Chromebooks, which you all have to share. That means each of you will have about 5 minutes to use the computer before you need to pass it on." I don't have to imagine, I live it.
We live in a technological world, but my students have such limited access to technology. Our school is making great progress despite these kinds of limitations, but imagine how much better they could do with the proper tools to support their day-to-day learning, creativity, and aspirations.
My Project
We're seeking a donation of five Chromebooks and hope to build a class set. Our students have Google Education accounts to compose essays, love to do PowerPoint presentations, and are even learning to code. Students don't always have access to computers at home, and this is their opportunity to explore the possibilities of their imagination.
The scenario presented earlier sounds unrealistic, but the truth is we only have a few Chromebooks to share.
We're often sharing between classes and grade levels to have enough for one class. Many of our assessments are done online, and students need to be comfortable with keyboarding and manipulating information onscreen and online. We face many challenges as teachers, access to proper tools shouldn't be one of them.
