Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Engaging my continuation math students, many of whom won't even pick up a pencil, is a constant challenge. Building robots, designing in 3D with Autodesk Inventor or 3dsMax have helped the young people I teach become students again. Letting them touch their creations matters and increases meaning.
Not all students automatically rise to meet our rigorous requirements.
They fall behind, they fail, and they eventually reach my continuation high school. Our students have ability, but they not only need to catch up academically, but they need to find success. My job isn't to drill and kill, but to engage students, involve them and let them see their success in academics and career preparation.
Our students are digitally connected, but they don't own 3D printers. By providing robots, 3D software and a 3D printer, my classroom offers reasons to go to school. They aren't rich, and their homes may be crowded, but they know the value of work. Offering them activities that lead to jobs, not drugs or the streets matters to them; even if they don't say it.
My Project
Our students will design objects - some practical, some artistic - and then connect a 3D printer and see their results.
A 3D printer is used again and again. Our schools offer three periods of Digital Art using Autodesk 3dsMax. In our technical math courses, students not only complete math activities, but are rewarded with access to our fastest computers and robotic parts. They have been unable to make the robotic parts that would complete their designs.
Yes, our students will be more engaged, but they also will develop skills and insights that increase their employability.
With the addition of a 3D printer, more of their projects will be completed. Their projects are not just exercises but marks of accomplishment. Responsibility results. Students grow. They mature when they can show the fruits of their work to their family and friends.
Struggling students will find something that brings them joy and success. Tangible 3D prints are positive.
