Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our charter school exists downtown in a city that has the highest concentrated rate of poverty in the country. However, we are not bound by this statistic. We go beyond rote memorization and engage students in the community. Projects, cooperative learning, and small-group instruction is the norm.
Our students come together from all parts of our city.
Our classrooms and staff are a beautiful, blended mix of socioeconomic situations. We, at Kepler, strive to provide a quality education that is free of charge. Our goal is to teach our K-8 students how to be good stewards of our community. How can we, as kids, teach and contribute to our city? Our school is bursting at the seams with excited, vibrant kids who feel comfortable in our environment and are eager to learn. It's beautiful to see our kids bringing life and love to the center of our broken city. As a teacher, it is my ultimate goal to provide a quality education to these kids that is full of new experiences and state-of-the-art equipment. A 3D printer would be incredibly unique and would provide a phenomenal experience for these students.
My Project
There are so many ways that we will utilize the requested 3D printer and filament. Here is a list of ways that my students will model their learning:
- Print personal, unique sets of base-ten blocks (100, 10, 1 unit)
- Represent fractions and parts of wholes
- Design items in parts that snap together (fractions)
- Model U.S. states in Google Draw for state reports
- Create and design rectangular prisms, calculate volume
- Students will recognize mathematics in real-world objects and design and model them
- Research, measure, design, and print regional-specific artifacts for U.S. Native American tribes
- Determine the theme of a novel, short story, or poem and design a symbol that accurately represents it
- Create appropriately scaled representations of the planets, sun, and moon. Use for display and to deepen understanding
- Identify real-world problems and model solutions using the 3D printer. Students identify something that needs to exist and invent it!
This project will allow students to have tangible evidence of their learning.
This will highlight the high ability levels of inner-city students. This unique opportunity will instill pride in their ability to apply and model math and other subjects. Students will be able to take home a physical representation of their learning. They will never forget this unique opportunity and will have a "forever" keepsake to spark their memories and understanding of those concepts.
