My Students

Our students need technology as windows to let their unique talents and perspectives shine out. They also need it to provide appropriate filters letting knowledge of our wonderful world in. Access is the key to academic success and productive, compassionate participation in a global society.

Challenges: • Over 90% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch • Rural location with minimal access to enrichment and cultural activities and experiences • Dependence on television for perceptions of the world • Fewer than 50% of students demonstrate proficiency on or above grade level • Generational poverty • Communication and literacy skills limited by local dialect and colloquialisms • Insufficient parental and community support and respect for education • Preparing 21st century citizens using a 20th century classroom model • Confronting big city problems in a small town: drugs, crime, gangs, rampant teen pregnancy and STDs • Unrealistic or truncated aspirations and hopes for the future Still, each has a brilliance and energy that can be, must be, faceted and polished.

My Project

The possibilities of iPod Touch technology are endless. Students can have instant access to information from a variety of sources, and will become more discerning when interacting with media. They will listen to music as mnemonic devices, and will create their own. They will explore different cultures, constellations, languages, recipes. They will navigate using maps, conduct surveys, and graph results. Word games will improve vocabulary and spelling skills, and applications like "Finger Physics" will augment the science curriculum. Hand/eye coordination, keyboarding, searching, and other skills will accelerate and increase the overall project effectiveness. Close monitoring will minimize the "passive activity" aspect of learning from technology, as students will be guided to applications and sites that encourage creativity and problem solving. Having fewer iPods will help children learn to work together, and to work smarter, not harder, to earn the privilege of being a "Pod leader."

Our students have some familiarity with personal technology devices, but not as a learning tool.

It will spark imagination and awareness of the limitless possibilities for the use of the iPod Touch, and, in turn, for their future. It's a difficult time to be an educator or a student at this point in our nation's history. Embracing technology in its most appealing and cost-effective form is the way to create habits of lifelong learners!
