Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it is like to grow up in poverty and lack basic materials such as books? This is the life of most of my students. They have a huge hunger to learn, but without the school providing ample resources and books for them to read, they will not have access to literature.
My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with.
They are 100% ESL (they comprise 65% of the school population) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and always want to learn something new!
My students attend a public school in New Jersey. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common in most of their households and the purchase of books for personal reasons simply does not exist for most of my students. If I can provide for them by building an extensive library of high interest books, both traditional and electronic, then I believe I can begin to help them become star students.
My Project
Reading is at the heart of everything. True success can never come if one is not literate. The overwhelming majority of my students are performing below grade level. Based on my experiences and conversations with my students, it is evident that they not only like reading, they WANT to be surrounded by books. The same is true of technology. What many of us see as a commonplace, simply does not exist for students. Access to technology is limited to the city library and the occasional opportunity to use it in the classroom. If I can bring e-books into my classroom through the use of a Nook, then I am not only providing additional reading opportunities for my students, but I am also opening their world to the modern technology that exists.
My goal is to start the 2012-2013 school year with at least one Nook available for use.
Although I teach large groups (anywhere from 20-30 students), the ability to have at least one will allow me to begin to use it with struggling readers or ESL students who are reading at a beginner's level of English. A Nook will help me energize and excite my students.
