Were you able to take a class without walls or bell schedules? vThis is what Summer Earth Studies offers. vA 21 day emersion into earth sciences while traveling through the American west. No constraints of the class, no time limits on instruction or investigation, & NO boundaries on learning!!!
Teachers and their 28 students will explore Georgia on one weekend in May, and then fly to Salt Lake City in June to begin a western tour of the Rocky Mountains.
They will spend 21 days traveling in a loop through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.
The students that are selected after a rigorous application process and have a desire to add an experiential science component to their educations, encourage them to get excited about science as a vocation, have a high school life experience they will never forget, and promote a deeper appreciation of our earth and a desire to be its future steward. These students are required to pay for their portion of the trip, about $3,000 each, so any donation of supplies will be greatly appreciated.
My Project
The students and teachers will be exploring the geologic wonders of the American west. We will need geologic hammers to investigate and collect samples for study. Also, some of our studies will take place in caverns or at night; so, headlamps are going to essential.
Students will earn valuable science course credit on their transcripts.
The trip is truly a course, complete with field problems, tests, and a final exam. Over 100 students have attended over the last 7 years. Students have expressed the enormous impact of this course on student maturity, self-confidence, and in several cases, future interest in pursuing the sciences in college. By reducing the cost, we will be able to provide this incredible opportunity to a more diverse student population.
