Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others" - Jonathan Swift. My students are learning to look beyond the surface and get deep. By keeping your eyes and imagination open they are finding art is everywhere.

My students come from backgrounds of the hard working poor.

Art is never a need in their world, but a luxury for people with money and better education. They come from schools that in order increase test scores artistic exploration is a rare event. By the time they get to secondary school, their experiences in art are few if any. My high school knows this about our students and is giving them the access to arts by making visual art a "core" requirement. Not only do all our students get to create and self express but they use art to problem solve by making connections to their other classes.

My Project

Drawing boards. They are portable studios. Where is the studio? It's everywhere we are with a few supplies and tools. My students have little experience with the true tools of the artists' profession. Not only will these help my students be portable in their art making but also to be inspired by tools that are real and not just makeshift.

I want my students to start noticing, looking, and observing.

These are skills that will support them across all the disciplines, into college and beyond. They can begin to change their passive vision and become active visionaries.
