My Students

Think about the games and various ways your iPad helps you in your daily life. Sometimes you might stop to play a game or check your schedule, or make a list. First graders can use an iPad in a similar manner!

I am a first grade teacher in an urban Virginia school.

My students come from many different types of family situations as well as educational backgrounds. My kids' needs range from dealing with learning delays to gifted learners. Usually we average 17 boys and girls in a first grade classroom.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad2 with 16GB and WiFi to use in my first grade classroom. I envision this fun piece of technology as a method to engage students with a variety of apps which can be downloaded to help with reading, writing, or math...just to name a few academic areas. While I'm starting with just one iPad, I would eventually like to have 3-4 in my classroom for use as a daily station. In the station the students would have the opportunity to use a variety of reading, writing, or math applications depending on the topic we are learning about. By using Apps instead of the Internet on the computer, there would be more time for students to work instead of clicking around and often times closing the Internet program. As I'm sure you can imagine the frustrate this causes young learners. Because the iPad is "fun" the students often don't realize they are learning or practicing skills learned in the classroom. Instead they are engaged on a completely different level.

I am requesting this iPad because I watched a mentor bring her iPad to school this past year to work in a 1:1 situation with a very busy little boy.

The little boy was engrossed in the activities the mentor had downloaded on her iPad. I thought that's a wonderful way to reach more students in a different manner. That's what I want for my students to have the ability to reach my students with a wide variety of resources and tools. Thank you for supporting our busy classroom.
