My Students

We are working to create a love for reading in our classroom. We do this through book talks, offering current titles, providing a variety of genres, and offering great literature at different reading levels. It is not just about the books, but the environment and space we create in the classroom.

We are a 4/5 Montessori class in Colorado.

My students are open minded and inquisitive about the world. They love learning and being creative. They are a community of learners that support each other, as well as, a positive safe learning environment. They love to read, and being a part of creating their love for reading is something I feel very proud of as an educator. Our school is a charter school and we have a wonderful and supportive school community. My students love giving back and every year we focus on community service as part of our curriculum.

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom where you see a child that has always struggled with reading sitting in a bean bag chair in the classroom library engrossed in a book. It is our job as educators to create a safe and inspiring learning environment for every child in our classroom. Having a comfortable and inviting classroom library becomes a part of creating our classroom space and therefore our community. Research has shown that students who have a classroom library in their class consistently do better in school. Not every child gets access to books outside of school and it our job to provide this exposure in the classroom. Our class libraries need to be kid friendly so that the children feel comfortable using and owning the space as their own. Offering a comfortable and fun seat for a child to read in as opposed to their desk is an important part of creating a playful, educational, and engaging classroom library and environment.

The most important difference that these bean bags chairs make in the classroom is that through creating a kid friendly classroom library we are making reading fun, accessible, and something they love doing!
