My Students

Envision the fluffy white peaks in The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Wouldn't it be great if the students could extend their learning with a meaningful art project replicating his artistic style?

In the beautiful vistas of our rural state where my public school is a true gem.

The students are hard working, artistic, and motivated. In every classroom there is a mix of all learning styles and students range from gifted abilities to those with special needs. One constant is a love of learning and a desire to create their own products.

My Project

These resources will provide students with a wealth of learning opportunities. The art supplies will allow students to retell stories, create projects, respond to literature, and used as story starters in writing. Next, the audio books include 5 popular children's books at grade level. Hearing fluent reading modeled is crucial in attaining proper reading fluency and intonation. The non-fiction readers will allow students to engage with exciting and informative text about a plethora of science topics that meet the National Science Standards. In social studies, the paper doll art supplies could be used to create community helpers, study cultures from around the world, or compare long ago and today in a fascinating manner.

When I announce that we will be doing an art project, the students cheer.

Using art as a direct response to literature and creating products that expand the child's mind to the highest order of thinking skills is powerful teaching. Science and social studies can easily be integrated through cross-curricular projects. These books and audio books would be a welcome addition to our meager classroom library!
