The fifth grade students whom I have the pleasure of teaching are full of potential. They strive to be decent in an often indecent world. They want to be better, they want to do more. The students are very active and full of energy. Many of my students willingly stay up to two hours extra each day to work on math, reading and various enrichment programs. They attend school in a state that ranks as one of the worst in terms of achievement. The students come from an area with an ever-increasing amount of poverty. Once a school serving the middle class, our school is now over 75% free and reduced lunch and living below the poverty line. The school is located in a predominantly lower income, Hispanic community. Many of the students in my class are bilingual and learning English as a second language. The school they attend is feeling the effects of the recently reduced budgets.
