"Where words fail, music speaks." These are the words of Hans Christian Andersen, but they express what music does for so many young musicians. Music proves to be not only an enriching subject but also an avenue of expression. I direct two middle school band programs in rural Appalachia. Each band has students from grades 5-8. I also teach kindergarten music, serving four different elementary homerooms each week. Funding is extremely limited and I make every effort to provide these students with a full and rewarding music education.
