Seventy-nine percent of our student population is considered low income. My classroom consists of 24 wonderful students from diverse backgrounds. About 75% of my students are English Language Learners. More than half of these students come from homes where families speak little or no English. Reading comprehension, spelling, and grammar are some of the areas of difficulty for these students. These students are delighted to be in school. They are the first to volunteer to read during reading and they are the first to raise their hands to answer a comprehension question. Unit wrap up projects are one of their favorite activities. To explain their understanding of key concepts, I assign unit projects to show their creative sides. Many of these students lack the resources at home needed to be able to demonstrate the creativity that they possess. Having art at school gives them a much needed outlet.
