Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I guess the best way to start is to tell you a little bit about myself and my students. I have been teaching for 9 years, the last 6 in kindergarten. I came to teaching later in life, my first career as a Food and Beverage Manager in upscale hotels. My students are 4 3/4 to 5 years old when they begin. Most come from low-income households, speak another language, and have not been to preschool. They are eager and excited to learn and learn best by doing. Each week, we study and learn about a new letter of the alphabet. We learn the name of the letter and the sound it makes. This is, of course, the beginning of learning to read. One of the best ways for the students to really remember the names and sounds of the letters is to do many hands on activities involving the letter of the week. During that week, we do an art project, a science project, a math project and hopefully (with your help) next year we will be able to do a cooking project, as well. At the end of the year, we will compile all the recipes into our recipe book of ABC's for each child to take home. To give you an example, if our letter is A, we might study apples. We would learn about the tree and the seeds (science), we would do an apple print (art), and we would make applesauce. For the letter B, we might study the banana and the seeds and bake banana bread. C might involve carrots, D might include the use of dried dates. By using all the senses, each child really has the opportunity to make the letter his/her own. The students really benefit from this multisensory approach and the cooking aspect involves reading, math and science in a fun and exciting way. All students in the classroom would participate on each project so that the entire class is engaged in learning. The materials are really quite simple: mixing bowls, measuring cups, measuring spoons, a small oven, and of course the food supplies themselves. My students would benefit in reading, math, science and social interaction if I were able to bring this project to life. Thank you for your time and help on this exciting project.
