Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Is it possible to explore the entire globe in only seven days?! Of course it is...IF the proper materials are available. No, I am not requesting a hot air balloon or a private jet for this fantasy vacation. I simply request inexpensive supplies for my students to use as they create a research-based travel brochure that highlights a country they are interested in visiting. Construction paper, scissors, glue, glitter, and markers or crayons will lead these teen-aged students into a creative project that they will remember for many years.
A large percentage of my students have never traveled more than 10 miles from their inner-city Chicago home. The students at Tilden High School are minorities living at or below poverty level. They have never even had a chance to explore Chicago and the many cultural and educational sites that are right around the corner. Believe it or not, many of my students have never been to the beaches along Lake Michigan!
These children deserve a chance to investigate different countries, cultures, and races. During the 90-minute Strategic Reading course, my students will feel as if they are traveling outside of their lives that are often plagued with poverty and sadness. I want my students to explore, investigate, and appreciate the magical and intriguing countries around the world. The seventy students enrolled in Strategic Reading are students who have failed sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. They were identified as "high risk" students who are likely to drop out of high school. I want to save them! They need hopes and dreams of success and magical places. They need faith...I want my students to know that they are important and that society has not forgotten about them. They need to feel loved. I believe this project will help them appreciate the many different races and cultures around the world. They will develop a desire to continue researching places that seem too far away to reach. This project, however, will teach these children that nothing is impossible. A trip to Italy or Argentina is attainable when a person believes in his/her dream.
