I am an Occupational Therapist in the Chicago Public Schools. I am currently servicing the West Side of Chicago. The schools in this area are generally under funded, and as a result, the students lack basic classroom materials. The children that I service are in Early Childhood Special Education classes. Their ages range from 3-5 1/2 years of age. They have a variety of developmental, cognitive, or physical disabilities. There are some children with multiple disabilities. Their disabilities inhibit them from performing activities as their same-aged peers. My role as an OT is to consult with the teachers to provide appropriate tools that would enhance their classroom performance. The classrooms that I service do not have adapted equipment to meet the demands of the students. The students would benefit from adapted scissors to improve their cutting skills. The adapted scissors are easier to manipulate than fiskar scissors. The children are only required to squeeze the handle to produce a snip or cut. There are also a variety of sizes to accommodate different hand sizes. I am in need of funding to purchase scissors for the students that I service. I want to be able to teach them a new skill or refine the skills they already have. I need cutting tools in order to do that. It is very rewarding when the students have an end product to take home or display. They are very proud of their finished projects and so am I. The children's smiles are priceless, and remind me of why I entered into this field. I would like to continue this growth with your help. Please consider this proposal.
