This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a high school special education teacher in the inner-city of Chicago, and I am requesting poetry books to help my students value reading while feeling good about themselves. You see, poetry is a great tool for teaching communication skills for special needs students since my students can freely express themselves without the fear of making mistakes in front of their peers. I would like my students to read multicultural poetry, as well as poetry that deals with the themes of love, death, and social concern in order to inspire my students to learn more about their community, and to give them hope for their future. I would like them to also write their own poems so that they can voice their own private joys and tribulations. I am requesting a class set of Nikki Grimes' "Bronx Masquerade", "Jazmin's Notebook", and Langston Hughes "Dream Keeper and Other Poems", as well as four visual posters to demonstrate poetic elements, because I think that these poetry books are high-interest and will offer unexpected connections with one another now and in years to come.
