I am a librarian at McLeansville Elementary, a rural school in McLeansville, North Carolina. I want to help my K-3rd grade students "picture" history using picture book biographies. All students are interested in learning about famous people's lives. As a librarian, it is my job to introduce them to biographies and encourage their enthusiasm. Often, however, biographies can be written in a dry, uninviting manner that is unsuitable for my younger students. I have found a set of 31 picture book biographies that are perfect for sharing the story of a person's life with my students. I propose to share these books with my younger students throughout the school year in order to emphasize special celebrations like Presidents' Day, Black History Month, Women's History Month, etc. I also want my students to "show what they know" after I read the books aloud. Because these are younger students, they will not be expected to write traditional reports. Instead, we will create class booklets with pages on which children will write about why the person whose biography we read was important. They will also have a space to illustrate based on the great drawings found in these picture books. The class booklets will be available in the library for other students to enjoy and, hopefully, become motivated to check out a picture book biography for themselves. I think these 31 picture biographies will be a great resource for my students in K-3. They will serve 199 students for the activity listed above, but will also be a resource for the school as a whole and be available for all 320 children to enjoy! Thank you so very much!
