I am a school librarian and I work in a library serving children in Pre-K through 5th grade. While working with 5th graders, I teach a unit covering various genres. Biographies are covered in this genre unit. I would like to make studying a person's biography more exciting than just writing a report. I would also like to utilize my students' different learning styles and gifts in such a way that each student feels successful at the end of the project. I would, therefore, like each student to read a biography of a famous artist. They would compile a report with information from the biography and then complete a "mini-masterpiece" in the style of the artist they researched. We would then have an art gallery "show" for the school. We are in a rural setting in North Carolina with little access to an art gallery filled with "master works". Having these biographies, filled with pictures by famous artists, would certainly fill a gap in my students' exposure and experience. I have found a set of 45 biographies written about famous artists that I would like to purchase for the library to be used by 5th grade during this unit and by the larger school community as necessary. I think this would be an unforgettable experience for my children. Thank you.
