I teach an inclusion kindergarten class at a school located on a military installation. Inclusion means that I have special needs and general education students in my classroom. All of my students have at least one parent serving in the US military.

I have found that children take a more active part in their learning when they are able to physically participate in a lesson. Children love to have their picture taken. Even more so, they love to take pictures themselves! Why not combine these two ideas - active learning and photography - and really get children involved in their learning, especially about the world around them.

In order to combine learning with real-life photography, I need digital cameras for my classroom. My school has 1 camera allotted per grade level (for instance, 9 kindergarten teachers share 1 camera), but it is about 10 years old and is not child-friendly. If my classroom had 2 new digital cameras strictly for us to use, we would be able to utilize them every day in all subject areas. We could take the cameras outside during a science lesson about seasonal changes. We could take pictures of things that start with "B" during language arts. And we could illustrate hand-written books about ourselves with real photographs of ourselves. I can then share these photos with my students' parents via email, particularly parents who are serving overseas. Parents will then be able to take an active part in their child's learning and can reinforce lessons at home!
