When it comes to my students, I always feel free to brag. I've got to be the luckiest teacher in Illinois. I have a group of inquisitive, enthusiastic, and highly motivated seven and eight year-olds. They come from a tough neighborhood, but they're the sweetest kids you could ever know - I'm talking hold-the-door-open-for-you, shake-your-hand-with-a-smile-and-a-look-in-the-eye nice. If you were to come into my room and ask them "Do you want the easy work, or the hard work?" they'll all yell in unison "THE HARD WORK!" because they know that hard work is the only way to get smarter. I know, because I ask them this every day. Since the first week of school, over 80% of my class has turned in extra homework. I'll ask them why and they'll simply say "Because I want to get smarter." Eight year olds? Turning in extra homework? We need to harness this enthusiasm while we can, and set them up on a life path for success. Can you help change the lives of these kids?
