My 5th graders at a Title I school in Maryland have lots of potential but lack background knowledge. Many of the students come from poverty, broken and transient homes, and need lots of encouragement. They do not have some of the experiences I did growing up such as family vacations, homework help, or knowledge of current events. Instead, they have much different experiences such as helping raise their younger siblings, witnessing violence, and living next door to drug dealers. For numerous reasons, these students have bigger things on their mind then reading and school. However, our school strives to show these students what success and achievement feels like. I see their potential for learning and growth, and I want to engage their minds and give them the adventures that they never had in the hope that they will become better, independent readers.
