Chester Park Center of Literacy through Technology (COLT) is a unique school. We are a technology school in a small, rural community. Our school is a school of choice for parents and students based on the individual needs of the student. Seventy-six percent of the students at COLT receive free and reduced priced lunch. The proposed project will help the third grade students at COLT. When you enter my classroom, you will see that, for a rural community, we have made great strides in seeing that our students are exposed to many types of technology. One area of weakness for our school is that our students do not get the hands-on experiences with technology that they need to compete in today's society and with students of other districts. Each of our classrooms has a desktop computer and an interactive whiteboard. The desktop computer in the room is used to operate the whiteboard. This means that while the board is running students do not have access to a computer in the classroom. Our school has purchased numerous computer programs to enhance student achievement, but students do not get much time using these programs due to a lack of an additional computer in the classroom. This project would give students access to a computer, which in turn would allow them to access the computer programs we have purchased that will give me, as their teacher, more information on how to meet their needs and will give the students additional practice on the concepts covered in class. One program our school purchased is the Odyssey Program. This program will allow teachers to customize educational computer software to meet the varying needs of students. After the student has completed the program, the results can be printed out so that I can assess, using the data collected, the students strengths and weaknesses. In turn, I can re-teach concepts, which will be beneficial to my entire class. In order to accomplish this, I need a computer and printer. In addition to the printer, I need the ink cartridges for the printer. This would make it possible for students to utilize the technology our school has purchased. COLT has helped the students of Chester County raise their standardized test scores with the use of technology. Now, we need your help so that our students can soar!
