"I teach 3rd grade at a public school in South Carolina. The enrollment at my school is approximately 500 students ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is our school's mission to develop responsible, independent learners who value diversity and the arts.

The students and faculty at my school are actively involved in many service learning projects that are incorporated into the classroom curriculum. We also have school-wide jobs that allow students to experience the process required in obtaining a job. In my classroom we have also raised money for and participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life walk. The students have been able to use this experience to count money, graph information collected from other classrooms, interview family members about cancer, and write about their experiences.

As we prepare to begin a new school year, I would like to incorporate a "class account" that would allow students to learn about money management while hopefully instilling in them a desire to reach out to help others. Language arts and math would be integrated through the use of a unit on the study of money. This opportunity would allow the students to learn about spending and saving, practice addition and subtraction, practice using a calculator, and provide students a chance to be able to contribute something to their own school or even to a greater cause beyond the doors of our school.

In order to accomplish this goal, our class would need 24 calculators to allow students to balance our class account, an overhead calculator that would allow me to model the use of a calculator for students, a chart stand and chart tablet to display the class account in a central location, 25 pocket folders with fasteners for students to keep track of both our class account as well as their own personal account, and 24 small piggy banks for the students to start their own personal account. The class money will be deposited into an account set up at a local credit union.

I would greatly appreciate your help in providing these students with the following opportunities: 1) have fun while improving basic math skills; 2) develop life long money management skills; and 3) create a desire to give back to the community. Thank you for taking the interest and time to read through my proposal.

My project needs 24 piggy banks, 24 student calculators, a chart stand, chart tablet, 25 2-pocket folders with fasteners, and an overhead calculator. The cost of this proposal is $566, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Stacy, Harlan, Erin, Megan, Kieran, Laura & Rob Pilkington and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you so much for funding this project. I am very excited, as I know my students will be. I am eager to implement this project because it will allow the students to use what they are learning about money and community service to give back to both our school and local communities. Thank you again for giving my students this wonderful opportunity.

On Dec 13, 2007, Mrs. T. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
