This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In just two short months, 30 anxious sixth-graders are going to bounce into my classroom, ready to see what another year has in store for them. For many, the summer was full of stress due to their challenging home lives. Our school is located on the south side of Chicago in a struggling part of the school system, and most students are not used to having a beautiful classroom on the first day of school. I want their eyes to widen and their hearts to leap when they see their new classroom, and you can make that happen by providing the materials necessary for a warm, inviting reading corner.
The reading center is the focus of my classroom, and as of today, all that exists for it is a few old metal bookshelves. Allowing students to take responsibility for their own reading development by using the library is very empowering and truly creates better readers. Having a beautiful and unique library only makes that empowerment stronger. I need your help in providing new book holders, a fun and inviting reading rug, bright bean bag chairs and cuddly pillows to make reading a peaceful, happy experience for my students. You will be funding not just some furniture, but a year of great reading and good memories for years to come. Please help us read in a happy place!
