Being a music teacher is very rewarding. I love my job and my school. Our charter school has excellent leadership, a caring staff, and most of all, the best students you could ask for. Over 400 K-5th grade students come through my door each week. I enjoy showing them just how fun music can be.

One challenge that Charter schools often face is funding the necessary parts of their program with a fixed amount of money, while still providing a well rounded program. When I arrived at my school three years ago, there were very few resources and very little monies available for the music program. We desire to have a strong, relevant, 21st century music program yet often don’t have the funds to do that. Our school has great momentum and spirit and we are excited about developing every area of the school that we can, including the music department.

I recently received certification in an approach to teaching music called Orff-Schulwerk. This approach is centered on the belief that music and movement – to speak, sing and play; to move and create – should be an active and joyful experience. One aspect of this approach is the use of barred instruments such as xylophones and metallophones as an extension of music already alive within a child. Since most children learn kinesthetically (hands on), playing an instrument is an excellent way to extend their musical experience. Every child that comes through my door, whether in kindergarten or 5th grade, can play these instruments, with no prior musical knowledge or skill. Every child can experience and create music in a community of other children in a tangible way. These instruments are beautiful but expensive. I currently have only four of them, which means it takes a long time for everyone to get to play and can make class time difficult. Ideally, each student would have their own instrument; however, adding a few at a time would be a tremendous help.

Adding additional barred instruments to my classroom is an excellent way you can provide a one of a kind opportunity for students to make music in a way they never have before! The musical possibilities with these instruments are endless and I get excited just thinking about it!
