My project requires a gel electrophoresis chamber and mini power pack to allow students to separate and compare molecules of differing sizes, such as proteins or pieces of DNA.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Flushing International High School is a grade 9-12 public school dedicated to meeting the needs of recent immigrant students in New York City. We work with speakers of diverse language, cultural and educational backgrounds to ensure all receive access to an education that will allow them to achieve their own American dreams. As a biology teacher, I struggle to overcome these personal differences, as well as the abstract nature of my discipline, by using hands-on lessons that involve the learner in the active DOING of science.
One of the most important and least well understood areas of biology is genetics. While each of us contain billions of copies of life's code within us, it requires great leaps of imagination to recognize the profound lessons and implications of biotechnology. Ideally, students would have an opportunity to extract, observe and compare their own DNA with classmates in the process of learning about our common genetic heritage. The equipment required to accomplish this, however, is outside the normal means of a high school science budget.
By obtaining a reasonably priced gel electrophoresis apparatus suitable for classroom use, students will come to a personal understanding of DNA by working with their own cells. This apparatus is a durable piece of equipment which would serve students for years to come. Your support can make cutting edge science accessible to a disadvantaged population of students struggling to learn new content, a new language and a new way of life in the United States. Please help make positive, empowering science learning possible!
