"We are a small Title I high school. The student body is 99% minority with a good portion qualifying for free lunch. Of our incoming freshman cohort, 25% are classified as special needs and another 20% are ELL. Most of our students fall within the lowest learning levels (90% fall within Level 1 or Level 2). We are a small school with great needs, but extremely limited resources.

Since most of our students have difficulty comprehending the complex concepts of science, the best means to teach is to present the materials in a hands-on setting (not the traditional chalk and talk methods). When students learn by doing, they own the knowledge now and forever.

My proposal is to offer my students a way to learn about the ever-growing field of biotechnology and genetic research by doing hands-on laboratory activities and real-life research. Our ultimate goal is to expose our students to the possibilities offered in science and to better prepare them for what to expect in college.

If granted, I expect to use the kits with the equipment I have received through the generous donations of others to train my students in the use of research quality equipment associated with biotechnology and genetic engineering/research. The kits will directly impact 50-60 students annually in the AP Biology course and in the Biotechnology science elective. In addition, since the State Living Environment curriculum includes units on biotechnology and genetics, every student will have use of the equipment and kits. This means that an additional 100-150 students will also partake of this hands-on experience.

It has been my great fortune to receive training in the use of Biotechnology. I now wish to pass on my knowledge to my high school students in the hopes that they will go on to discover great things in the future. These kits will provide our students the freedom to create and carry-out independent research projects.

Yes, this is an expensive proposition. But, I can think of no better way to make science accessible, while training future college students/scientists/medical professionals.

My project needs duplicate sets of 14 Biotechnology kits from Carolina Biological Supply Company. The cost of this proposal is $4,092, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."
