"I consider myself lucky; my high school (a traditional, grades 9 - 12 high school situated immediately off of an air force base in a rural area of northern California, near San Francisco) has an incredibly supportive and energetic staff, administration, and principal. However, this school is also extremely old and has not been able to update its facilities in some years. The most direct way that this has affected my life as a history teacher so far has been the school's lack of an LCD projector. While I make my classes as interactive, interesting and intriguing as possible, with old textbooks, limited internet access and limited printing supplies, there is only so much I can do to make history more than just "boring old white men" to my students.
My classroom is incredibly diverse; I have just as many military students who have traveled the world with their parents as I have socioeconomically disadvantaged students who have not left the tri-county area. Having a functioning LCD projector is vital to making history - especially world history and government, subjects which can be extra abstract to students - accessible, intriguing and exciting for students. My military students and their parents have extraordinary resources, such as pictures and other artifacts, which can be displayed for the whole class using an LCD projector. This helps the entire class in two ways: 1) it helps the military students, many of whom have recently moved to the area and have not had the benefit of being included in public education, connect with the classroom and the area, and 2) it helps give my students who have not had the benefit of traveling a glimpse at history in action, up close and personal. The benefits of an LCD projector in any classroom are tremendous for all students. History is no longer about textbooks and one-dimensional characters.
Unfortunately, LCD projectors are expensive. As a new teacher still paying off student loans, I cannot afford to purchase one on my own, and would sincerely appreciate it if I could get the funds donated to purchase an LCD projector for my classroom.
As a history nerd, I want nothing more than to bring history to life for each and every one of my students. An LCD projector is an indispensable tool in this pursuit, and I know that my entire school would appreciate any help in pursuing this goal! My project needs one reliable, long-lasting, Macintosh-compatible, fully-functional LCD projector capable of projecting movie clips, websites, pictures, digital copies of exciting primary sources, PowerPoint presentations, and other documents.
