My Students

Do you remember the smell of play dough, the feel of it in your hands? How about squishing it, cutting it, stamping it? How much fun it was to stamp letters all over your page? Well, that is exactly the experience I am trying to create for my students in a literacy context.

My students are learning English as a second language.

They are high poverty students who are just learning their letters, sounds and basic words in English. Most are immigrants or children of immigrants, that are eagerly learning English as they attend their local elementary school, a Title I school, for the first time.

My Project

With these resources, I want to create a more engaging, visual and tactile literacy environment for my students. I want to start to integrate some art materials into my literacy program by having students use play dough and stamps to make letters and words. My students will use the play dough cutters and stamps to create letters they are learning to practice in my class. They will use the stamps to create words and in some cases sentences, that will further their English language acquisition.

Please help me to bring these artistic elements into my class to develop a more engaging, visual and tactile reading environment for my students.

We will be forever grateful for helping change the lives of my students by giving them a creative and engaging reading experience, in turn, making life long readers and learners. I feel this will aid them in their quest to learn the English language starting a ripple effect that is unmeasurable.
