This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Technological resources at my inner city San Francisco public high school are limited. We were a school that once emphasized the use and innovation of technology. Unfortunately, we don't have much up-to-date equipment to speak of today. Our equipment is limited, old and often in a state of disrepair. The need for new technology includes a slide scanner that would take our teaching into the twenty-first century.
My social studies department has an extensive collection of literally thousands of slides purchased over the years to supplement our curriculum. These slides are of valuable primary source materials including: paintings, signed historical documents, photos, maps, charts, graphs and other terrific materials that we can no longer access. Our last functioning slide projector that five teachers had been sharing is now out of commission which leaves us all unable to view the slide collection. It is not feasible to have that single slide projector repaired nor is it economical to purchase another machine since it is has become obsolete technology.
We need a scanner that will enable us to scan our slide collection converting them into digital files which could then be saved on the school server. Having these images on the server will allow the entire department and the rest of the school to access this incredible resource with a few clicks of a mouse.
Our slide collection is currently gathering dust instead of engaging our students in full color and on a larger than life screen. These slides are invaluable to our teaching. They help illuminate events and ideas that are simply inadequate to try to teach with a textbook or a black and white handout. We serve a student population with a wide range of reading ability. Often times it is the visual resources that allows our students to make connections to the texts, lectures and more importantly the historical past that we try to convey.
Thank you for your interest and generosity!
