Sherman Alexie's Flight

My project needs 35 copies, a class set, of Sherman Alexie's novel "Flight".

I teach at an urban school of 900 students. More than half our students are immigrant students and over 70% qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of our students do not live with parents, many are living in foster care and/or are dealing with the juvenile justice system. Their attendance can be spotty because of any number of reasons. It is critical to have high interest books that will hold their attention when they are in the classroom, books that are authentic to their own experience. Sherman Alexie's latest novel "Flight" has a mixed race protagonist who lives in foster care and deals with substance abuse and other issues familiar to many of my students. Next year I will teach sophomores, having had many of them as freshmen. We will hit the ground running and I would like to start the year with a novel that allows for spirited discussion and permits a large range of responses both orally and in writing. Students will choose from a list of projects, many of them with visual components. They can create storyboards, diary entries, comic books etc. to show their understanding and they will work with peers on planning their projects. This will allow me to assess both their thinking, reading and writing ability and more importantly their ability to work with peers. Having a current text with themes that resonate with students can make the difference in whether they attend school at all.
