I teach a general education inclusion first grade classroom with some special education students included. I teach in a Title 1 building with many students on the free and reduced lunch and textbook program. My students thrive on using hands-on learning manipulatives and materials because they do not have access to them at home.

Many students in my classroom are reading below grade level. Their oral language skills are also below average. Each day, my students participate in literacy work stations with a partner. While students are working at their stations, I work with a small group of students on their reading skills. I would like to create a drama work station in which students can read, retell, and remember stories.

In order to create a drama work station, I need materials. The materials that I am asking for are books, puppets, and various storytelling kits. Students will be able to use these materials to retell stories. My students would have so much fun acting out stories to bring out their expression and creativity.

By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to practice oral language and reading skills through a hands-on drama work station. Students would enjoy retelling familiar stories using the storytelling kits and puppets. This project would make a HUGE impact on my students, while practicing and enriching reading and language skills at the same time.
