Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever camped? Many of my students are "camping" in their own water beaten homes. They have borrowed all the can openers from the consumer science department just to be able to eat at night.
Our Middle School is a diverse high-need school comprised of over 1,000 students in grades 6 to 8.
Half of our student population currently receives free or reduced priced lunch. Approximately half of our students receive support services in addition to their core classes. All of the students have been adversely affected by Hurricane Sandy.
My Project
Hurricane Sandy and the storm surge has crippled our small waterfront community. Many students are going onto our second week with no heat or power, all have had no school and some no longer have homes to return to. The supplies I have selected are to help the students who are living in homes which no longer have access to power and gas utilities.
The lighters and can openers can be used to assist families while they continue to "camp out" at home.
We have been told it may be over a month if not longer before power is restored to this part of town. Please help open a ray of light.
