Mrs. G.
Grades PreK-2

I teach Pre-K to two sessions of twenty students in a rural elementary school in South Carolina. Our free and reduced lunch percentage has climbed to 51% and many of the students come from single parent families and have limited experiences and resources. Due to time and schedule limitations, my students do not get to go to Art class and therefore, all of their early Art experiences are taken care of in my classroom. Many of the students come from single parent families and have limited experiences and resources. Forming effective and lasting relationships with parents only serves to help the students in their academic career. I would really like to encourage parents to become involved in their child's school experiences, yet due to numerous factors, like employment status and transportation needs, some of my parents are unable to come to the school to volunteer their time or attend things that their children might participate in at school. There is extremely limited funding for my program because it is state funded, and many of the things I need or want are unavailable unless I spend my own money to get the materials. I want my children to be able to experience many things, and working with a wide variety of art materials is one thing that I view as very important. This past year, through a stipend from my district office, I was able to send home boxes of art supplies that the students could work with and then return the finished product. This program was very successful, but due to limited supplies and minimal funding, I was unable to continue the program once the materials had been exhausted. This program was very important to the children and the parents all reported that the boxes enabled them to spend time with their children doing something that related to school but that their children also looked forward to doing. This program also helped me to build relationships with parents through our communication about the program. The solution to the problem is to continue "Art in a Box" with a new funding source. I have recently finished a Master's Degree thesis and my thesis was written about parent involvement in preschool. In order to write this thesis, I conducted months of research on parent involvement and the use of art in the classroom. Then, I used the "Art in a Box" program to study and used the findings to determine that this program was very successful and would be very worthwhile to continue for future classes of Pre-K students and their families. The benefits to the students are almost too many to count but some of the most important ones are that art experiences encourage children to work with their hands, to experience new things that they might not experience again, and to be able to express themselves through different medium. This past year when I used this program, I had sixteen boxes that were filled with a various art medium. The children signed out a box, took it home and made something using the materials. They could keep what they had made or they could bring it to school to be displayed. Each week, the materials were changed so that the children got to experience different types of medium each week. In order to restart this program, I would need to purchase new supplies to use to fill the boxes that would be checked out. Most of the items that I would like to use are those that are not considered to be "normal" classroom art supplies such as crayons and markers. While I do consider those two types of medium as important and useful, I want to be able to help expand a child's knowledge and experiences through the "Art in a Box" program. I would like to use various types and textures of paper, oil pastels, color diffusing paper, glitter, various types of string and yarn, colored pencils, texture plates and various types and textures of sponges. By exposing them to these types of materials, I allow them to be creative, and I also empower to make choices about how they choose to use the materials that I have included in the boxes. Although these items are not currently available in my classroom, I was able to purchase these items this past year through the stipend that I received. These items were included in the "Art in a Box" kits and gave the children a wide range of experiences that were related to art. I want my students next year to be able to have the same experiences that my students this year had with "Art in a Box." I also do not want to see that my student's experiences in school are lessened due to their family financial situation or the lack of funding in their school. I want them to have the opportunity to create something beautiful that they can keep to look back at when they are grown. I also want them to be able to use things that they will never be able to use again in elementary school due to the limited resources that our school has available. I also want them to be able to have something to take home to work on with their parent to form a bond that will hopefully encourage their parent to continue to want to do things with them as they grow. Watching the smiles on the faces of the group of students who were the first to be able to use this program was very meaningful to me. It meant something to everyone in the Pre-K class as the students got to take a box home and then brought back the creation to share with their classmates and teachers. This experience was something that will always stick out in my mind when I think about this program.
