Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students are interested in playing music of all styles. We have been running an after school program for about three years now, slowly acquiring a variety of instruments for our students to use. The program started by giving guitar lessons after school. More and more students have become interested in guitar, as well as other instruments. The goal of this proposal is to bring as many different instruments into our school as possible. Our goal is to have a variety of instruments for the students to sign out and to use on campus for practice, performances, and recording. Specifically this grant is for a drum set. I teach Graphic Design and also have a strong background in Fine Art. I have been playing guitar and a variety of other instruments for most of my life and wish to share my interest in music with the students at our school. Our school is a small, growing Charter high school. Our high school is in its fifth year serving grades 9-12, having just graduated our first senior class last year. Our school serves a low income population just west of downtown Los Angeles. The school is committed to high expectations, social justice and college readiness. I teach the digital media classes, a student newspaper elective class and help in our after school music program. The proposal is specifically for a basic drum set, including cymbals, high hat, tom toms, crash cymbal, floor tom and snare. Having a variety of instruments available for the students has been a positive force in sparking the students' interest in music. The students are encouraged to try different instruments, as well as becoming accomplished in one. We have students currently using the instruments to begin bands of their own, practice for church tryouts, and just beginning. These students will be working toward performing their music for school functions and community outreach events, as well as creating original recordings. I believe that music education is important to the academic development of our students, as well as encouraging personal expression and creativity.
