Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"These kids are reading at a fourth or fifth grade level," my friends who teach high school complain to me.
As a fourth grade teacher, I'm not surprised. Many of the students in my classroom are at a first or second grade reading level. At the rate at which they are advancing, they will get to high school still only able to access texts written for elementary schools. I believe this is one of the major factors contributing to the 50% dropout rate in the district I teach in. How can anyone enjoy a class that requires them to read a textbook that they don't understand?
The sliver of hope in all of this is that, I believe, fourth grade is not too late to catch these students up and put them on a different academic path. As soon as they pass into middle school, there will not be time for phonics instruction and a lot of remediation. I, however, have that time. Because I teach the same students all day I can sit with my group of struggling readers and guide them through texts that are at their level, reviewing phonics and basic comprehension strategies that will propel them to become capable independent readers.
The books that I am requesting are at the level of my most struggling readers and are also books that will interest and motivate them. There are 5 copies of each book so that we can read them as a small group, allowing me to reach more students at once. With the commitment of my students and myself as well as these materials, we can significantly impact the path that these children's lives will take after they leave my classroom.
