Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at a Title 1 high school in Houston, TX. One of our largest problems with getting students the academic help they need is that they do not want to stay after school for tutorials. Recently, we have started a program called Science Jeopardy where students play a fun game and can win prizes for participating. We borrowed a Classroom Performance System to use for the tutorials. Each student has his/her own remote control so that every student can answer every question. It is so much fun! We see an average of 24 students at each session, with some sessions having more than 32 participants. Because there are only 32 remote controls, we have to limit the number of participants and use a first come, first to play system.
In order to make the game more competitive, and to entice students who normally would not stay after school, we also include prizes. Each student gets a ticket for each game in which they participate. At the end of the 12 game "tournament" the student with the highest accumulated score wins his or her choice of the available prizes. Then, all of the tickets are put into a box, and students are chosen randomly for the rest of the prizes. This year, the science club sponsored the activity and purchased the prizes, but we would like to continue this program and need to seek donated prizes in order to do so.
If we receive this technology, it will also be used in our science classrooms for enrichment purposes. I am currently using a borrowed system and sharing it with the science teacher who is next door to me. With our own system, we would be able to use it twice as much. Each of us also teaches a TAKS review class and I currently use the borrowed system in that class everyday. My students' passing rate on the test is 88%. The passing rate without the class is only 35% and the passing rate with the class, but without using the system is 55%. I am convinced that reviewing the released test questions using the CPS is what gives my students the advantage on the test. I would like to help as many students as possible with this system!
