Most of my students live with single parents, and several have been severely challenged by life's early experiences, including loss of initial care-givers, loss of homes, and moving into shelters.
The dramatic-play area is one of several environments in the classroom that the children benefit from. Here they can take on the role of mother, father, baby, doctor, police officer, etc. For a while this year the area was converted into a "bakery," and role playing extended to bakers, cashiers, and shoppers.
The benefits of dramatic play are immense. The children grow in their understanding of the world as they take on various roles. They may learn to deal positively with earlier frightening experiences. And there is vast opportunity for language development, as talk and role-negotiation are nonstop.
Our dramatic-play area has the usual furnishings: a pretend sink, stove, refrigerator, a table and chairs, dolls and a doll bed, and some dress-up clothes. We also have a child-sized couch, large enough for three four-year-olds, where a great deal of the talk and negotiation takes place.
Our couch is at least ten years old, and barely held together by a few threads. (Four-year-olds can sometimes be rough on furniture.) I'm requesting the "Comfy Couch" made by Childcraft, which is very well constructed, and would provide years of invaluable service.
Thank you for considering this request! The cost of the Comfy Couch is $256, including shipping and fulfillment Live Updates
