What is the best way to learn about nature and science? Can you imagine the fun children will have walking in an outdoor garden? The pleasure of seeing butterflies and bees pollinating plants, watching birds in their habitats, and discovering fossils in a rock pit are all developing possibilities for our students at Spring Creek Elementary. Our school, in collaboration with community partners, is developing an outdoor classroom including four discovery-learning stations. We will strengthen natural science lessons learned indoors, teach the importance of environmental education, and enhance classroom work in math, reading, writing, history and the arts. Our school is located in a rural community of northern Tangipahoa Parish. It serves a population of low income, at-risk students with 75% of our population receiving free/reduced lunches. I teach a self-contained second grade class of 19 students. I want my students to be competitive in the state mandated testing as well as the workforce of the future. Our outdoor classroom will also encourage family and community involvement in our school. However, there are still many items that are needed for learning in this area. I am asking for materials that will enhance education in the outdoor discovery stations. These materials will not only be used by my classroom, but potentially all 383 students at our school.
