Great Readers Understand What They Read!!!!!!

My students need 80 notebooks where they can respond to the books they are reading.

My Students

"I did read that book!" I hear this statement all the time! In third grade, students are making the switch from learning to read to reading to learn. With this switch, many students struggle to take the time to understand what they are reading.

I teach third grade at a charter school in inner city Washington, DC.

My students come from around the city to our school because they know we are the school that will get them to college. We believe that all of our students are going to college and we work every day to ensure this happens. Many of my students come from families that have never had a family member go to college but they believe that their child will be the first to go. In my grade, we departmentalize by subject. I teach reading to three classes of third graders. With this many students, it is a challenge to check my students understanding of their books every day. It is also a challenge to talk with each student every day about what they are reading. I know that students must be inspired to read great books and that they need to have great conversations to do this. I am looking for a way for my students to explain what they are reading even when they are working alone.

My Project

These journals are amazing! Inside of each book is an explanation of great reading strategies and response questions based on the genre of the book. Students can respond to up to 35 books inside their journal. If my students read 100 books in a school year, they should be using up to 4 journals a year. My students will make enormous growth as readers if they not only read 100 books but also show their understanding for 100 books. These journals give my students this opportunity. I can't wait to see how my students reading levels with soar when they take responsibility for their reading and response in these journals. I am sure my students will become independent readers using these journals because they will be able to not only respond independently but then share their work with their peers.

Reading is the most important skill a student can master.

It impacts all parts of their lives. A student can only be a great reader when they understand what they are reading. These journals give me and my students an opportunity to check understanding for each book they read. Please help me help my students.
