Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Flipping a class is an exciting way for a teacher to meet the needs of every child at every level in math. While my students and I are very excited about this idea, we run into the problem that many of my students do not have Internet access in their homes. These tablets solve this problem for us.

I teach the most incredible bunch of kids you could ever meet!!

They are athletes, musicians, actors, scouts, and more! They soak up knowledge and ask questions that drives me to want to be a better teacher each and every day. I love teaching middle school because of the great kids I teach. We are ethnically diverse with a high Hispanic population. We have over 50% of our kids on free or reduced lunch, but with the support of donors through this site I am building a classroom that gives my kids access to 21st century technology. One of the best things about middle school kids is that no two of them are alike. Every middle school student I have ever taught is interested in so many different things. The tablets requested in this project will allow me to meet each student's needs and interests not only in math, but in science as well by downloading videos that are chosen specifically for that child. Differentiation for the individual student is simply a better education model.

My Project

The tablets we are requesting will be loaded with software that will allow my students to access a multitude of programs while online and off line. I am currently working closely with Irynsoft, a company that will load their software on the tablets. This will allow my students to view videos off line while they are at home, allowing us to "FLIP" our classroom. Flipping a classroom is when a teacher assigns a lesson, usually a video, to be learned or watched at home or outside of class, and then has the students come in to class to practice the skill in a supportive and collaborative environment. This would be instead of having the students at home working problems on their own in the traditional lecture/homework method. Khan Academy is a wonderful tool for a middle school math teacher to use for this concept. My students and I are very excited about this, and we have been flipping our class in very limited ways this year, but with these tablets we will be able to really flip out!

Students who have access to the Internet at home are up and running, but the students who do not have internet access must come in to my class before school, after school, or during lunch to watch the videos on my classroom laptop.

The tablets would provide a way for me to send these videos home with a student. Just think, having the opportunity to rewind a teacher and have him reteach you a concept over and over again until you understand. You no longer have to be the kid who doesn't get it.
