Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten students are fascinated by money, but they don't understand how it works. Many of my students don't understand why 2 quarters gets them 1 bag of popcorn on Thursday, but a dollar gets them 2. With more materials, I can begin to teach them more about money.
I teach 22 wonderful kindergarteners at a great elementary school in a small town in Texas.
My students come from loving families that are struggling in these hard economic times. Over 90 percent of the students at my school come from low-income households. Most receive free lunch. All students are now receiving free breakfast through a federal program. With their bodies nourished, it's time to feed their minds.
My Project
Money is an interesting topic. Students love to learn about coins. It's like I'm revealing a big mystery when the ideas come together and they start to understand coin values. With Colossal Coins, Money Heads and Tails Stamps, Money Puzzles, and Money Cubes we can start to explore this important mathematical concept. A Math Memory Match game would give us another way to relate pictures of money to money values.
These materials would provide a wide variety of large group activities, as well as small group and math center lessons.
Please see the value in this project, as I teach my students the value of money. I know my students can make "cents" of it all!
