$$ Spend It ? Save It?

My students need age-appropriate and sound advice for safe and responsible handling of money through financial literacy and storytelling.

My Students

When you were young, do you remember earning your first nickel? Do you remember the first time the tooth fairy left you a quarter? My students are at the age to receive tooth fairy money! In this rural school, eagerness to learn is high but often families are forced to spend all they earn.

In this small, Arkansas town, our school serves students for many miles.

My kindergarten room has 6 girls and 9 boys. For many of these students, family members are often unemployed. Students are eager to learn at the kindergarten age, often seeming like open books to write on.

My Project

With the shopping list I created, students would learn the value of saving money using age appropriate books that I already have, such as Corduroy, and A Chair For My Mother. In both books, children save money in a Piggy Bank for items wanted. The parent center can make paper piggy banks for students to "save" money by using coin stamps and linking the money to behaviors. With the other books, students will learn the history of money, why save money and what goods and services are needed and what are those "wants". Financial literacy can start at this young age, as well as safe and responsible handling of money. And, it can all be fun to learn!

Financial literacy is very important now, but will be ever more important in the future.

You hold the future of today's early learners. Nearly all of the shopping list can be shared with other kindergarten teachers at my school which will compound the learning and the fun!
