Super Speedy Typists Need Headphones for Typing Program

My Students

Do you remember typing class, the textbooks, and the dinosaur typewriters? It was so boring and mundane. Today our kids can learn all the typing principals with fun typing software that includes tutorials and games. However, to take full advantage of the programs, we need headphones at each station.

My students attend school in an economically depressed area of West Virginia.

Many of them do not have computer access at home. All of their education concerning computers comes from school. Our students truly enjoy using whatever technology is available at the school. They grow very excited whenever something new is presented. The students rotate keyboarding, art, music, and PE in our school. Keyboarding is one of their favorite classes because they get to "play" with all the cool technology. However, they are missing out on so much because we lack such basic supplies as headphones.

My Project

I am simply asking for a classroom set of headphones. By using headphones, students will be able to fully complete typing lessons with the online tutorials and dictation lessons that were unavailable to them before. Also, having headphones will help them to become and stay better focused on their own computer and lessons. One activity I would like to do with my keyboarding classes is a public service announcement. To be able to successfully complete this activity, students would have to choose video and audio for their projects. I have not attempted this because it would be impossible with 25-30 students listening to music coming from their machines all at the same time.

It is my desire as a teacher to offer every opportunity afforded to me to my students.

Many of the students in our school have such low sense of self worth. Can a simple pair of headphones change that? I believe the headphones would be a resource to help them complete project they can be proud of, projects even their parents could not attempt. We are moving forward in technology at the speed of light. I would hate for something as simple as headphones to be a speed bump for these kids.
