Books! Books! Books!

My students need more books in our classroom library, including biographies, multicultural stories and a math literature collection.

My Students

We need books! My classroom library is empty. My school flooded last year, and was declared a total loss. Along with the building being destroyed, most school materials were lost. Classroom libraries were washed away! My students need more books to read.

My students are eager 6th graders who want to learn!

They attend a public middle school in a unique location - the city sports auditorium! We lost our school in a natural disaster, so we are temporarily housed until a new school can be built. The students have been amazing in the transition to such an odd place for their education. They are so resilient!

My Project

I am requesting sets of various genres of books for my students. "The most effective reading programs are generally supported by large classroom libraries. The better the libraries, the better the reading achievement as measured by standardized tests. Books contribute more strongly to reading achievement than any computer software does." (Regie Routman, Reading Essentials, 1999). Students learn best from doing. In teaching reading, doing is reading. Students need books to read that they love. When students have access to books they love, they can work on comprehension strategies and skills that will make them better readers.

Reading is about comprehending and understanding the text at hand; it's about becoming so engrossed in the characters and the storyline that you don't hear your mother announce that dinner is ready.

How can that happen when students don't understand or love what they are reading? How can they learn to comprehend what they are reading when they don't have good books to read? Thank you so much for helping a child to love reading!
