'Rain Rain, Go Away!' That's what I hear from my students on rainy school days! Last year, our PTA graciously purchased our school an outside playground. My students love recess time; however on days when we must stay inside, students lack the quality supplies needed to have an enjoyable recess.
My class of 2nd graders love school!
We work hard during the day, and we play hard during breaks. Our class is very diverse; however we have learned a lot from each other over the year. Even though many students come and go throughout the day for programs such as Speech, GT, OT/PT, Resource, Dyslexia Therapy, and more, we have learned to work together, to participate together, to learn together, and to play together. Most importantly, throughout this year, we have come to THRIVE together!
It brings me joy when I see my students intermingling during the day-- they've discovered that it's okay to accept each other for strengths and weaknesses-- and also to love each other for them!
My Project
I would love to further foster that concept of comradery and togetherness, even during inside recess! Currently for inside recess, our classroom uses a few old puzzles with missing pieces, a few chess and checkers sets (some with missing pieces and some complete), a few board games, and paper and markers to draw with.
It would be an amazing sight to see my students challenging one another during inside recess. All the supplies I have requested require 2 or more players, and many of the games incorporate teamwork and patience. Puzzles are a great critical thinking tool, and they're also great for a classroom because many children can work together at the same time. This same thought continues to the blocks and Tinker Toys sets I have requested-- children can be creative while working in large groups together.
I can just see them now, happy and busy!
Throughout every day, I try to challenge my students.
When there is rain, or even weather that is too hot (yes, we are in Texas!), students miss the opportunity of outside play. I want to give my students an equal alternative for inside recess, something that is fun, challenging, and entertaining. I am not a teacher to simply put on a movie for inside recess, and these supplies would help in my own personal efforts to stimulate my students and fuel their learning!
