Great authors inspire kids to read more and to be great authors themselves! Reading a number of books by the same author creates a relationship between the author and the reader. I want to provide access to collections of books by Dr. Seuss, Chris Van Allsburg and Brian & Andrea Pinkney.
Walking into my classroom you immediately experience the energy and smiles that these diverse kids bring to school each day.
You will see skin 17 shades of brown & tan. Eyes of blue, green & brown; four languages spoken. Most of them eat two meals a day at school and might not have many books or a computer at home. Our school strives to create a nurturing place for every kiddo to feel safe enough to take appropriate learning risks and challenge themselves to be above expectations.
My Project
Author studies are a great way to expose students to the craft of writing a great story. By reading several books by the same author, we will notice patterns and themes throughout his/her work. I have a few books by Dr. Seuss in my classroom library, two by Chris Van Allsburg (famous for The Polar Express) and only one by Andrea & Brian Pinkney. Most kids know Dr. Seuss already and I would like to expose them to more books by these writers to show the styles of contrasting successful authors.
As a class we will also research the authors' biographies and attempt to connect the lives of these authors, what they have done & seen, to our own lives. This will allow students to see that their experiences are worth writing about too!
In my experience, 2nd graders are excited in general about reading new books. When they have heard the author's name before they get REALLY excited!
Having these books by great & prolific authors in my classroom will give my students (and years of future students) access to books they probably wouldn't get to read otherwise.
