My Students

When you were in High School--did you ever read anything that you truly enjoyed? Did your teacher ever make you participate in friendly weekly competitions -- both mental and physical? The Hunger Games has changed the face of my classroom-collaboration, strategy, and success are required to WIN!

My classroom embodies a well diagnosed case of multiple-personalities disorder; you can find the baseball player, biology loving cool guy and then you have the quiet, shy girl who creates avatars and writes 5 page short stories.

Their future ambitions include-funeral directing, becoming an EMT, modeling, and focusing on being a forensic specialist; however by finding a book (series) they are all interested in, we have managed to find a common ground that everyone can invest in. Within an urban setting, buying books for the home is not a priority, nor has it been for several years. We find that most students are two to three years behind the desired reading level. Most students must leave school at school and take on additional responsibilities when they go home. It is important to capture their interest and desire to learn in the short time I have them each day.

My Project

The Hunger Games has already changed my classroom. By finding a text that all students enjoy reading, we have been able to ignite an interest in reading that some have not had since elementary school. I have also been able to differentiate and motivate students to hold one another accountable for their learning. I have created 12 district teams in my classroom and students receive weekly points for a variety of activities-- they receive points for attendance, academic performance, behavior, and physical activities. This structure provides each child with an opportunity to excel or achieve in at least one domain weekly. What student doesn't want to participate in dodge ball? The catch is you don't get to participate if you haven't completed all your work! We have 100% assignment completion. My goal is to continue reading this trilogy in order 1. Pique student's reading interest ; 2. Use the book to make parallels to life, college, and the government; and 3. Students HAVE FUN & LEARN.

In a world where better readers create better writers, you can increase that desire to read.

Also, you can help provide students with an opportunity to make one of the deepest connections in their life. The underlying theme of this trilogy, highlights the 'haves' and the 'have nots,' and how our system is sometimes set up to ensure failure. MY(urban setting,low-income)CHILDREN need to see that with strength and desire, they have the power to impact this world and the system in ways no one intended!
