Snapping the Digital Divide Shut

My students need 5 video cameras to improve their literacy and technology skills and close the digital divide.

My Students

Our students want to improve their literacy and technology skills by making movies. We have computers and movie editing software, but we do not have any digital cameras (still or video). These cameras will allow us to create stories, make and edit movies and close the digital divide.

Eighty-five percent of our K-4 students are English language learners, and 96% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Our school is committed to closing the achievement gap and is outperforming schools across the U.S. in academic achievement. All 450 students attend technology class and all 450 will use the cameras. Most students do not have computers at home. For most, school is the only place to access technology skills that they will need to reach their future dreams of college and beyond. According to the U.S. Dept. of Ed., 82% of schools with less than 10% low income students offer access to computer technology. Access to technology drops as the percent of low income students increases. Your donation will help flip this statistic. Our bright, enthusiastic students need technologies to enhance learning and be highly sought after employees in the future. Source: http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s0264.pdf

My Project

These cameras will help close the digital divide. Students will take pictures on a shape walk or publish their narrative or persuasive writing with video. They will use editing software to publish their movies. With five cameras, 30 students will use them in small groups simultaneously. As a literacy teacher, I visited every students' home. I took a picture (on my personal camera) with each student and their family with our classroom college mascot, Goldy. We sent Goldy along with letters and our pictures to our pen pals in Uganda. When the students sent back pictures, one of my students said, "That boy is holding a picture of my family." We learned about languages in Uganda and Alexis said, "I did not know there were 41 other languages besides English and Spanish." These cameras will enrich our students' skills and our connection to our Ugandan friends. The cameras will enable students to lead more complex projects, building their literacy and technology skills.

All 450 students will be able to use these video cameras again and again.

With these cameras, students will be able to create and sequence stories, make persuasive public service announcements, develop writing and language skills in English, and learn how to make and edit movies. Our first graders will build on the recorded audio questions that they made to make a class movie to send to our Ugandan friends. All of these projects will help my students close the digital divide.
